I think that British cuisine lost its earlier interest in spiced curries during the early part of the 20th century. The first English curry recipe dates from 1740s and the first curry restaurant opened in London in 1810, But by the 1920s-30s curries at home were mostly used as a way of dealing with leftovers.

With Ransome's weak stomach, he may also not have enjoyed spicy food as it could have caused him intestinal troubles.
