Immigration from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh in the 1970s and 80s really increased the number of restaurants in Britain. Growing up in the 1960s, the only exotic restaurants were Chinese, but by the time I was at university in the 1970s, Indian restaurants were springing up in a lot more places. People who acquired the taste eating out now started to cook their own curries at home with another explosion of products such as ready made sauces etc. to help.
But today's home cooked curries bear very little resemblance to a 1930s English curry which was flavoured with curry powder and very little else!
