It's after the dowsing at 'might-have-been'; Titty and Dot are climbing the path from Tyson's and Dorothea says:
'I'm going to put it in a story.... Differently, of course. I'm making you a boy, and you do that business with the stick all by yourself...'
I wonder what AR was going there? Satirising the ordinary run of children's stories of the time? Because it's the exact opposite of what he is doing himself. In his world, Titty confronts her demons and comes up trumps. And Nancy is the natural leader and dominant character of all of them.
I'd just not noticed that little bit before.
