Two rubbing strakes!

In laymans terms: see the two long horizontal strips of wood which protrude from the sides of the boat either side of the green stripe on Mavis/Amazon. I've linked to a photo below.

See also the opening photo of Swallow in Roger Wardale's recent article, which sparked this discussion off. Again, there is contrasting paint used between the two bands of wood.

Is this perhaps a design peculiar to fishing boats, to go with the extra strips of wood protecting the edges of the clinker planks lower down?
