Sailing on the broads as opposed to the rivers can be exhilarating; I have sailed a lot on Barton Broad, not visited by the Coots but shown on the maps in CC and BS. Sailing on the rivers has been made more difficult since AR’s day by the encroachment of trees along the banks. Before WW2, commercial priorities ensured good sailing conditions for the wherries, and banks were kept more clear.

River sailing can be hard work, especially on the upper reaches of the Northern Waters, and very frustrating in light winds; I make no bones about using the outboard. And the sheer volume of motor cruisers in the holiday seasons is a problem on the winding streams.

As for “steam” giving way to sail, it is often just not an option, as in different circumstances AR admits in WDMGS.
