Roger:

Excellent point, now we get to the heart of the English Legal Systems, duelling experts.

I would however observe that Dick, Squashy Hat and Captain Flint, certainly understood and practiced the basics of scientific principles quite well. (CF perhaps a tad less)

We teach advanced courses in Research Theory in my College, I can tell you that Dick is more advanced than my average student in knowledge of scientific principles.

We all make mistakes, the joy is looking for them and determining the most probable interpretation. That AR is human is obvious, that he was devious underhand and plain sneaky in making his places hidden is a given in the backstory to SA, but he tried, so let us examine the trial.

There are usually two hypotheses for any problem, the null hypothesis that says in this case your plan is correct and the other hypothesis that says it is not. Both cannot be correct.

In this case I would argue that the required roof lines and the chimneys provide a problem for your design. So in duelling expert terms, I would ask the barrister who is questioning you to ask the question:

Mr. Wardale, granted that you are a Ransome expert, the obvious question is "Did you allow for the number and location of the chimneys in your plan?"

(Having been in that position - you are damned which ever way you answer, so it is a trick question.)

1. If you say yes you did, then the barrister will take you through every chimney, till you find an inconsistency, then you just killed your credibility in court
2.If you say no, you just killed all of your credibility in the court?

There are of course very few people who enjoy this type of cross examination, myself included. Duelling experts are not really human if they actually enjoy this type of behaviour.

But on the other hand that is part of the fun of life, human arguments in a friendly form.

JMN
