I agree with Peter. A lovely house (when built) in a glorious situation, but not Beckfoot-like. According to WG Collingwood (who should have known) it was built by a Miss Creighton of Bank Ground for a surgeon by the name of Bywater. He lived at Lanehead for some years and his three children were all baptised in St Andrews in Coniston. The Bywaters left in 1875 and the next tenant was a Miss Melly who lived there until 1892 when it became the Collingwood's home until Titty was forced to sell in (I think) 1967.
There is a really good painting of Lanehead as AR knew it at: www.geog.port.ac.uk/webmap/thelakes/html/maps/m00960.htm (I hope I have that right)
If this fails, the painting was found by entering Lanehead Coniston in Safari.
