I think that there, an essential difference is that in the Lakes series, he started from a set of childhood memories, of Bank Ground and Lanehead and the lakes, which had a powerful emotional basis even if his superb skill in writing could transform them into a background for a commercially successful storie(s). The Broads stories were more 'researched'- as we know from the Bawdsley towers- with great care. It's a different situation.
