If I may argue from one example, the late Victorian house in which I grew up, interior doors were not usually placed in the middle of a wall. They were placed in the corner of the room with the hinge towards the long wall. I was told this was to reduce draughts (drafts if you prefer) when the door was open but it also made for more flexibility in furniture layout. One consequence was that the external door-handles of two adjacent rooms could be within a foot or two of each other. One had to be careful to open the right door.
