I don't understand why Peter thinks that configuration is "impossible".

I have looked at the pictures of Beckfoot in PM, there are two which show chimneys, one with them at the gable ends, and one which shows them appearing in the middle of the roof. The former seems quite possible as my own grandparents house was set up like that and had four fireplaces in the four rooms on the ground and first floor which fed into a set of four chimneys in one combined flue at the peak of the roof.

Having them inside the building seems much less likely to me.
