It does sound very "BBC English" of the era - entirely expected considering the prep school/public school development. The "Edwardian" observation is interesting though, because I do wonder what impact AR's many years living abroad and mostly speaking Russian might have had on his accent (and indeed on his cultural hinterland more generally). People who lived in the colonies and returned to the UK in the 40s or 50s often found it an odd place, quite different from the UK they remembered (or indeed the UK they imagined, if they'd never actually lived there) and would often have "old-fashioned" accents and clothes, etc. I wonder if there was an element of that with AR.
