An interior feature for which there is no canonical justification but which would probably be present in a house of Beckfoot's period is a lobby. This lies between the exterior and interior front doors, acts as an air-lock in inclement weather, and provides a place to store and don ones outerwear. In American parlance it is a "mudroom." In Scotland we called it the "porch."
I don't think any of the plans I've seen show it.
