From the observatory end, certainly- although the weak torch (Dick wasn't a chap to let his batteries run down) was at the farmhouse end. But wasn't there a phase of signalling that involved covering and uncovering a room light? Presumably the nights in those days were much darker than they are now, precisely because there wasn't all that artificial light about. But would an oil lamp give enough light to be much use for signalling?

Do we actually know when and how extensive domestic electrification was around the Lakes?
