It was fascinating to see AR's close-up sketch of Beckfoot. I too had noticed the improbable chimney placement and I wondered if AR had based Beckfoot's exterior on a house he had seen briefly in passing rather than on one he knew well. If he never went back to sketch or photograph it, this would account for his getting some details wrong.
I've recently been browsing the Lake District via Google Maps. (I last visited in person around 1965.) One thing that struck me is how few big houses there are. If there is an ur-Beckfoot somewhere, not necessarily on a lake, it should not be too difficult to find. That is, if it ever existed and if it still exists.
