I'd started with Coniston which is a bit sparsely populated. When I looked round Windermere I found lots of farmhouses, every second one of which was a Beckfoot candidate. I think of Beckfoot as being a comfortable but gentrified farm rather than a cotton baron's luxurious country estate. In my version of this fictional world, the kitchen wing was the original farmhouse, stables and all The main house was a later addition.
I got the Telegraph to show me today's period properties but not the view of Town Head (404 error). Google showed me a large estate with a cattle grid, a gate and a sign saying "Private" at its entrance. I don't know if that was the right place.
