Yes, same here. I was five at the time, couldn't work out what use it was to have the little tab drop down in its window- especially in the basement. By then it had become my dad's workshop, although it was still the washroom; big circular galvanised tub with a galvanised mushroom in the middle to let the water boil through the wash- and a gas ring underneath. Presumably, in Beckfoot, something similar on top of the kitchen range.
