The fun of finding a 'Ransome' place (in the Lakes) is partly the fun of the chase and successful discovery, with the pretty certain belief that it in part inspired a well-loved Lakes location. But it also colours the real place as it exists in our imagination. My Wild Cat Island is more complete since I have been to Peel Island and seen Ramp Holme at close quarters.
Yet it does not always work to our advantage. When I first saw and entered Bank Ground, it was rather different to today. For me, it WAS Holly Howe, but time has played tricks with the building etc and I doubt it does much colouring for first-timers today. Perhaps the reverse. The setting, of course, is still glorious.
Similarly, I would be surprised if a first-time visit to Horning adds much to AR's imagery.
