Let's be honest- they aren't making the film for us. They are making it for today's children, and their first goal is to make money with an entertaining film. The books are still the books.
If that film leads to new generations of people discovering Swallows and Amazons, and reading the books, then I count that as a win. If it takes a spy subplot to get the movie made, so that can happen, so be it.
