Roger: I'm sure that you're right. Times do change and the nature of children's books change too. But there are cycles; I did read the first Harry Potter book, out of interest, and was struck by (1) how good it was and (2) how much it had echoes of 'Stalky and Co', the classic school story but updated to account for the fact that children now will have seen 'ET' and 'Star Trek' (showing my age here) probably on TV at home, and will have quite different expectations of what a 'story' should be. So what went around did come around, but rather different in form.
To create AR readers, the film would have to be true to the books, but for the backers it has to make money- it's an expensive punt- and may lead to a different emphasis. We'll see.
