You can't translate a book directly into a film that works (I don't just mean at the box office but as an artistic product) but the danger is if you deviate from the spirit and the world of the thing. If you want to make a spy adventure set in the Lake District with elements of AR's life and elements of SA in there, it could be a wonderful thing, but it wouldn't be Swallows and Amazons. That's not to say the action and dialogue in the film must exactly follow that of the book - I don't think that would make a satisfying film - but additions should hint at the wider world in "the 12" rather than the wider "native" world that the spirit of the books keeps very much out of the readers' concerns; and changes should probably be mostly about pacing rather than about detail. There's plenty of filmic detail there - after all, old boats sailing in the Lakes look brilliant - the problem is not insufficient "real-world" peril (after all night sailing and burglary are real enough) but probably too gentle and gentile a pace for a modern movie. Chapters like "Island Life" and "More Island Life" don't exactly drive the plot on (curiously SA is probably the only one of the 12 where the plot doesn't race along in a surprisingly filmic way for the era they were written)
