Peter - I so agree about 'Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy', though I read the book because of TV series I have read a few times since. I think the other thing about it was that plenty of 'screen time' was given to develop the plot. I feel the same way about ITV adaptation of 'Brideshead Revisited', the recent film versions of both I have on DVD but can't bring myself to watch them!
As for AR, it is a matter of 'screen time' too - why do films have to be fast and full of action? If all the production values are right it can develop at the pace of the original.
