"The Thirty-Nine Steps' is my pet example of how film-makers successfully botch a perfectly good book by changing the story. The first (Donat) film version was the most accurate -- but not all that close -- and every remake since then has departed further and further from the story. The more recent couple have been essentially unrecognisable. One almost wonders, since book titles per se can't be copyrighted, whether film-makers simply pick the title from a book they know has sold well, then make up their own film under the same title with the expectation that the tile will help sell the film to unsuspecting viewers....
