A very interesting example is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. I saw the film, and enjoyed it so much I got the book to read on a forthcoming intercontinental air journey.
First surprise: before the film came out, the book had been called These Foolish Things, so that ruins Mike Field's theory above. Then apart from the basic theme of British pensioners retiring to India, the film and book had very little in common. For a start, the book is set in Bangalore, and the film in Jaipur.
So, having read the book, and still with four hours to go till landing, I watched the film again to make sure my impression was correct. It was: both are excellent, but the film is not true to the book.
