Whilst AR’s draft says the idea of a bathing hut formed the basis of the North Pole. I cannot see that the building he illustrates was ever a bathing hut – not with the large windows unless there was previously unsuspected voyeurism in the Windermere area!

I think AR’s description of “the old view house” describes the purpose of the building, which he may well have taken from elsewhere with his cut and paste methodology.

The stereo of the building I have is obviously purpose built and not either a prototype for the North Pole or a rebuilt ships cabin. Unfortunately I cannot upload a copy as an attempt to improve the text reading seems to have corrupted the upload to PC facility.

The building appears to the wooden built with a standard gable roof. There is a wide front door with a glazed arch above the door extending to the peak of the gable. There are two windows in the front and none in a visible side. At the back of the building there appears to be some form of watch tower with a gabled roof. The print is faded and some details are indistinct.

It is worth looking at the 6 inch maps of the period. There is no bathing house marked in 1898, but there is one marked in 1919 and 1929. This is located on Brathay Neck which is the spit of land with the River Brathay to the left and the lake to the right.

The Bathing House with a landing stage out into Windermere is about 2/3rd of the way down the neck and almost opposite but just above Ambleside steamer pier. There is no trace of this on modern OS maps or Google earth or its MS equivalent.

When I was training in the Naval Section of the CCF, the Petty Officer used to say “Wait till she answers” to cover the time lag between tiller/sail alteration and resultant course change. This seemed perfectly descriptive to me.

I am not surprised that you receive scant and poor reward for your literary efforts Roger. The only people who make money are those who write best sellers or school textbooks. I have never made any money out of the booklets I have written. My only limited success was in writing requested articles for professional journals, where I was paid about £200 per printed page and this was some years ago.

The duty of the Literary Executors must be to maximise income for the Literary Estate. Not sure if there would be a conflict of interest if the level of charges is preventing dissemination of AR’s work. Doubtless an approach to the Literary Executors for bulk usage would be worth doing. Whilst Universities will charge for copying, there usually ways to minimise these costs.
