Is "Udal" the sort of name that crops up in Cumbria naturally? I'm not a great scholar of these regional matters, like which ends of the country has more towns ending in -ham than -ton. Is etymology the right word?

The ending -dale is a popular one in the northern counties, but ending in -al may not be? (Wikipedia tells me "Udal law is a near-defunct Norse derived legal system, which is found in Shetland and Orkney, Scotland and in Manx law at the Isle of Man." so it could well apply to the Lakes area. Google Maps has no Udal.)

I wondered how scholarly AR was when making up (native) place names.
