Even a centre-board dinghy of Amazon's vintage would have had a long straight keel I think, just not as deep as Swallow's. These two links are to pictures of my fifteen-foot centre-boarder Aileen Louisa, showing the straight run of keel merging into a sort-of skeg that Magnus talks about.

Keel and Transom

In AL's case the rudder originally projected below the keel but I cut it off level with it (thereby making it somewhat less efficient) because I kept her in a mud berth where she took the ground twice a day and when a projecting rudder would have been an enormous nuisance. (If you remember, there's an account in 'Secret Water' of how the pintles on Swallow's rudder were damaged because her rudder projected below the keel and thus snagged a pile as John was running her ashore.)

But is my memory failing, or doesn't Mavis still exist in a museum somewhere? If she does, then you might be able to get drawings or photos of the original boat.
