One of the islands 'had houses on it', is possibly a reference to Belle Isle.
From about 1250 the island was the family seat of the lord of the manor of Windermere and known as Long Holme. Later the Philliopson family lived there for generations. The present round house dates from 1774. The Curwen family moved in shortly afterwards and lived there until 1993. The island takes its present name from Isabella Curwen.
