The problem with sacrificial keels is not so much that abrasion leads to loss of material, but that abrasion leads to loss of varnish/paint, which leads to water ingress, which leads to swelling/rot etc.
Eventually these bits of wood look almost furry/hairy on the bottom, when the soft wet wood gets scraped on something.
