A side comment to Magnus' observations about corresponding entities. I tend to think of Ransome's approach as "assemblage" -- that is, combining features of different places (or boats) to create a fictional entity, rather than simply making up bits. Might have been because he could easily visualize details of the resultant construct.
That doesn't help much in the search for a properly located centreboard case since it could have been from any dinghy with which Ransome was familiar.
