I think the Collingwoods were a very English family, and Ernest tried to be as English as he could.
Being raised in Aleppo used to plenty of servants, I suspect that the children were a little exotic. I felt this about Taqui and Titty, who maintained strong feelings/links with Syria, while Susie and Roger in particular, seemed thoroughly British.
I can't disagree with your point about Beckfoot's soul.
