I did not intend my reference to Mr Jemmerling to be taken quite so literally.
My apologies, I was thinking of him purely in contrast to the 'main' characters. Gnossie/Squashy is very interesting, in that we know rather a lot about him, but very little of what he was like. But AR's version of him is a nicely rounded character, a good co-prospector and friend, and you suspect that that was what AR had in mind, no matter what the strict reality might be. A novelist controls his world, after all, better than any documentarist.
