I am sure that I shall bring down hoards of Tarboarders on my head, when I say that I believe Victor Watson (Reading Series Fiction) is right to say that the Ss, As and Ds are magical, mythical children, developing through childhood in their own way, but never 'growing up'. Titty Guzelian understood this very well when she told me 'Titty was not me and never could be me.'
Paradoxically, although the Ss, As and Ds become 'real' to so many of us and the 'realistic' settings delight us, 'the twelve; do not belong in realistic fiction, rather, they have a place closer to the fairy tales that occupied AR as a young man.
Now I shall duck down behind the parapet!
