Is there any written/book evidence to back this up?

I don't know, but I do know of evidence to the contrary. The late Josephine Russell, who as a child knew AR, told of how AR would welcome the children of Rupert Hart-Davis to join him in sailing and he would raise the skull and crossbones to greet them. AR taught Josephine and her brother how to sail and Josephine said "He was a good teacher . . .He never lost his temper and he never made you feel humiliated or stupid or fumble-fingered"

(I learnt this from an article by Roger Wardale in Mixed Moss (the TARS annual journal) in 2008. Incidentally, I was amused to see Roger write about 'ducking behind the parapet" etc. From time to time, Tarboarders write this sort of thing and, as I recall, in every case nothing has happened. There was no controversy. On the other hand, sometimes a perfectly innocent remark can provoke indignation, out of the blue (I speak from experience). Internet forums are funny things . . .)
