Consider, though, that SW is the first (and only) "non-fiction" of the series where Nancy is essentially free of adult supervision, so she's able to be herself. John's just back from having been in charge in a real life-threatening event, and is now acting as his father's appointed representative with all that entails. The rest of the Swallows (with the exception of Bridget), during the course of WD, learned to trust his judgment in critical matters. It's only in humouring Bridget that the command structure breaks down.
