I always think that AR treats Nancy like a puppet, according to the needs of the Swallows and the plot until PM.
And there too, simply that in PM she, and her relationship with the GA, become the story, especially at the end, which in terms of the whole series is one of the dramatic pivoting points. And wonderfully successful in structural and emotional terms.
So she's a puppet there as well. But then they all are. I guess I've said this too many times, but AR is a master storyteller; all the characters, all the events, are a product of his craft. So they're all puppets, although some, like Peggy and Susan, are more constant than others- I suspect that those are the ones that interested AR less.
