I've had a similar joyous day or two by Secret Water. I don't know why it seems so special, perhaps more so than the Broads. Norfolk seems too big to feel the power of the books in, apart from at certain individual (and far apart) points.

The novelty of a road that hides underwater and a black-painted thatch cottage must contribute to the effect somehow. This is despite such cottages being commonplace in some counties. All others I've seen farther south are white.

If you sail there, the fact that you can circumnavigate the island, see the opening to the North Sea, and spot seals, all contributes to making it slightly better than any other tidal river/estuary that might have a book set on it.

As Roger says, the peace is important. You hardly see anyone there, apart from at the marina.
