I think the simplest direct experience is to go to Pin Mill and find it absolutely recognisable. WD leaps out at you; the Butt and Oyster, Alma Cottage, the sailmaker's hut at the top of the hard, all illustrated in the book by AR, and all there as you look around you. A perfect AR capsule.
In fact, of course, you can 'go' to Pin Mill via Google Street View, and it's all there. But going there physically is still a lovely shock.
