There has been some discussion over the years about how the characters spoke, mostly their accents. I don't know if anyone has analysed the language that Ransome wrote. People have wondered whether his journalist career affected his writing.
Ransome spoke with a pretty standard upper middle class accent of his time according to recordings that you can find. I suspect that in his head the S, A & Ds spoke in a similar manner as he does not attempt to show them speaking differently, unlike some of the Lakes or Norfolk characters.
