I've always meant to read the Powell sequence

You lucky fellow, to have that ahead of you. As with AR, it's essential not to be in too much of a hurry. Also as with AR, it might not be best to start at the beginning. My first experience, for some reason, was my mum reading me SD. After that, they were all rather easier... Shorter anyway. SD, what a monster... A good monster, though. But perhaps WH would be a good opener...
Starting out on Powell, it's probably easiest to begin with his war trilogy, ('The Valley of Bones', 'The Soldier's Art; and 'The Military Philosophers') which has the most compact and coherent story line, and then go back to the start. And whatever I say about Powell's prolixity, at the close of the 12 (the last several pages of 'Hearing Secret Harmonies') I can never help crying. But I'm soppy.
