Reading it in adulthood it seems so unlikely, I can't imagine the real pirates existing in Lowestoft in the 1930s!

I always felt PD was a bit far-etched, and my favourite bit was the chapter working their way down channel by lights, because that felt real.

It was only later that I realised that when civilsation and the law fail, people do things that as a child I thought of as unthinkable. I'd read about them, and even now, where we live in Peckham, there are said to be violent armed gangs who shoot, mainly, at each other. They have never bothered us, but Black Jake is real, all right. I never knew it as a child, but I do now.
