Well put Ed a good choice of quotes!
I remember when the first Harry Potter was published made a point of reading it (after all the fuss!) My biggest disappointment was the mediocre use of language and writing, given the hype I was expecting the modern equivalent of AR. When as a child I moved on from Enid Blyton to AR the difference in language and writing was obvious. Yet before J K Rowling started there was the likes of Alan Garner, particularly 'Red Shift', yet he has never achieved the sales or the level of fame.
I suppose publishers would tell us that if they knew what would makes a big seller they would be churning them out every week!
The wider question of encouraging reading in the young has been around for many years, example seems to be an issue (as a teacher I discussed this once said 'You never see Superman reading a book!') But as you say Ed despite being a reader yourself it seems to make little difference.
