Many years ago, in the weeks while I was waiting to be conscripted into the RAF, I copied out my 12 favourite passages from the 12 books in a small notebook to have with me.
Re-reading them, I can see no reason to change anything.
In no particular order:
‘Dark at teatime. . . holidays.’
WH chapter III
The morning mist was heavy on the river . . . into the mist.
BS chapter VII
‘What?’ said Nancy, very much surprised . . . active life.
WH chapter XXI
They went out together . . . ‘Let’s all go sailing.’
BS chapter XXXII
‘Tommy Jolys . . . this foolery.’
PM chapter XXIX
Peter Duck was sitting on a bollard . . . before it was too late.
PD chapter I
Softly at first . . . began to fall.
WH chapter V
There was a new world . . . She has never seen anything like this.
WH chapter VI
Last night . . . land, in comparison with water, seemed hardly to matter at all.
WD chapter I
And the little sledge . . . flew northwards in the storm.
WH chapter XXII
A smell of new-mown hay . . . summer holidays had begun.
PM chapter II
The explorers . . . islands of the Secret Archipelago merge once more into a long unbroken line on the horizon.
SW chapter XXXI
