Does anyone else have any such feelings about the twelve?
Inevitably, yes. For instance (I can hear the collective groan from here) I have not re-read GN for decades, and probably never will. When I first read it, I was luke-warm at best. It never caught me up, and always felt to me like a story too far.
Similarly with ML. After a first read, I never enjoyed the 'exotic' side of it, and, growing up, never felt it was an adventure I could possibly have taken part in or enjoyed.
PD I can take in bits; the sail up channel at night is a gem I can enjoy at any time. And Peter Duck himself is a lovely character, although I preferred his portrait as the Ancient in 'Racundra'.
I suppose that this reveals the grim truth; in my '70s I don't read them the same way as I used to... Golly... I'm less serious now, more of a lightweight; my working life was in would-be 'creative' work, as a television producer, Panorama and Horizon and stuff like that, and that changes a fellow. Now I enjoy AR for his skill and his style. The stories are less important. The atmosphere he creates is the essence for me. Which does narrow the field, and creates no-go areas.
