It's so difficult to say which is the best introduction, as it seems to me to depend on the individual child. When I was introducing AR in schools in the 60s -90s, I would wait until I had been with the class of 35 -40 for at least half a term before launching into AR. The Box of Delights usually dominated the second half of the Autumn term, leaving AR until the New Year, which fitted in with WH.
For what it is worth, I used SA, WH, PD (once) or BS as an introduction and followed it with The Hobbit, for the contrast. By the 90s I found the year sixes (10-11) were too 'sophisticated' for SA.
