I read the Box of Delights and The Dark is Rising as children and I certainly found the end of Box of Delights more disappointing.
It's worth mentioning the Susan Cooper (Dark is Rising) AR connection - she was a big fan and the first book in the sequence (Over Sea Under Stone) has quite a Ransomey feel about it, despite all the Arthurian magic and whatnot.
