"[B]ecause AR was not familiar with the locations and people of the Hebrides"
Funnily enough, I've used this as an argument against GN being metafiction. The children would be familiar enough with fictional desert islands and pirates, Chinese or British, to incorporate them into their own stories. They would be far less likely to have the background to base a plausible story in an obscure area such as the Outer Hebrides thus GN must have "really" happened. In GN, no one seems to have much prior knowledge of the area and its customs other than from Mac's charts.
