I, and I suspect many other AR enthusiasts, have great difficulty connecting the writing style of 'Hoofmarks' and 'Elixir' with the economic, balanced style AR used in the later books. Part of it is probably due to AR maturing and general life experience (including Russia), but my theory is that when he began writing for the Manchester Guardian, there was a tough old sub-editor there who cut out all the ornate phraseology and AR learnt a great deal from that.
