I agree with Peter H that Russia was the great formative experience for AR in economical meaningful writing. Whilst Peter probably rightly suspects that a M Guardian sub-editor had much to do with this, I think the exercise of sending his reports by telegram also had its own editorial effect.
Perhaps we have a glimpse of this when Cdr. Walker sends telegrams from Flushing.
Bohemia in London is a book I enjoyed, mainly because I knew the area and sometimes walked, as he did at night, from central London to the deepest southern suburbs. No trains at 2am, little traffic (in the early 1960’s) it was a great time to walk on a summer’s night.

On a different topic, if you can see Lakeland Can today, there is a picture of a pigeon flying over Yewdale, perhaps a decedent of some well known pigeons. Also there is a picture of holly at High Cross. Remembering Mrs Dixons dictum about it being “a grand year for the holly berry” being a progenitor of a hard winter – can we hope for a frozen lake this year?
