I've never been quite so bothered about first editions, which is lucky, as I can't afford them anyway. Instead I go for quantity over quality, and try to make my shelves as full as possible for as little as possible on ebay.
However, as Roger W mentions, the thrill of a find in a secondhand bookshop is the most exciting. The smell of those places is great too.
