Having decided to be pirates, I can easily imagine Nancy and Peggy reading up about them and finding out their grisly fates. To be sure gibbets and public hangings were a relic of the past but just the sort of grisly detail to appeal to a Lakeland pirate.

Many modern children's books about pirates have descriptions of Execution Dock and J.M. Barrie wrote about Execution Dock in his play Peter Pan which was first presented in 1903 and for decades thereafter so it was fairly contemporary for the Blacketts.
